Our Story

Applewood Interiors was built on generations of hard work, craftsmanship, and a love for creating lasting beauty. The name traces back to Stephen’s great-grandfather's farm and commercial apple  orchard in Hamden, Connecticut.  Stephen's grandfather eventually sold the orchard when he retired and moved to Cambridge New York where he planted another small apple orchard. 

Stephen’s earliest memories were in his grandfather’s orchard, long before he started helping his father with homebuilding. Those childhood years sparked a lifelong appreciation for apple trees - a passion he carried into adulthood by planting an orchard at every home he owned, earning the nickname "Johnny Appleseed."

Steve's father also grew up working at his father's orchard but chose a different path, building custom homes instead of tending trees, but the values of hard work, commitment and craftsmanship he passed on to his son. Steve worked with his father building and remodeling homes from a very young age.   

Stephen and Sarah eventually launched Applewood Building & Design, designing and building custom homes throughout Upstate New York and New England, later continuing their work renovating homes in the Midwest where they moved in order for Caleb and Hannah to attend Union College. After school, the family returned to the East Coast and decided to join forces, combining over 40 years of building, remodeling and design experience with the creativity and business strength of the next generation. Together, they rebranded as Applewood Interiors, a family-run design and remodeling company specializing in high-quality transformations that any homeowner can achieve.
